A Note from Erin,
March is both Women’s History Month and the founding month for Women Who Succeed! We celebrate and commemorate the vital role women play here in Utah, as well as in American History. The women in our group are all from such unique backgrounds that we have woven a strong and beautiful tapestry for girls and young women across Utah. I thought you may enjoy seeing images of other unique women throughout history from the National Library of Congress https://womenshistorymonth.gov/images/ |
Locally, Martha Hughes Cannon blazed trails for women’s empowerment in Utah. Born in Wales and later immigrating with her family to the Utah Territory in 1861, Martha became a skilled physician, suffragist and women’s rights advocate, progressive public health reformer, and the first female state senator in the United States. Earning four degrees by age twenty-five, Martha saved money for medical school by working as a typesetter for the Deseret News and then the Woman’s Exponent, a women’s newsletter in Salt Lake City. It was in this role that lit her passion for women’s rights and developed aspirations for furthering her career. She established a private medical practice, becoming the resident physician at Deseret Hospital. During her time in office, Martha immediately established Utah’s first State Board of Health. She advocated for and created laws to restrict the spread of epidemics and create safer work environments for women and girls. Martha became a leader in the women’s suffrage movement, speaking at conferences across the country. Most notably, she became the first female State Senator elected in the United States, defeating her own husband who was also on the ballot. This Women’s History Month we celebrate Martha Hughes Cannon as an example of the impact female leadership can have on the state of Utah. The team felt it appropriate to highlight all our Women Who Succeed members that are engaging in public service, whether it is an elected position, running for an elected position, an appointed position, or serving as a leader in our Utah public sector – we wish to say THANK YOU! Thank you for stepping up to serve our state, to be involved, and to improve the lives of all Utahns. |
Purchase Tickets for Dr. King Now – $15
Women Who Succeed is proud to have Dr. Bernice King join Katharine Garff, Board Chair for Ken Garff Enterprises and Success in Education, for an hour-long conversation! In addition, Governor Cox will be joining and welcoming Dr. King to Utah. Dr. Bernice A. King is a global thought leader, educator, strategist, solutionist, orator, peace advocate, and CEO of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center For Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center), which was founded by her mother as the official living memorial to the life, work, and legacy of her father. In this position, Bernice continues to advance her parents’ legacy of nonviolent social change through policy, advocacy, research, as well as education & training on nonviolence. Kathi Garff will discuss with Dr. King her courageous conversations about the difficult racial and social justice issues impacting our world and how education is the key to overcoming much adversity. They will also discuss the challenges and success of being a female leader of such important work. The event is designed to be an inspiration to young women, and leaders in the community that everyone can step-up and make a difference in the lives of others. We suggest that students may be included in the distribution of some of your tickets as this is a rare opportunity.
A Women Who Succeed reception will be held in the OC Tanner Lounge at the Eccles Theater prior to Dr. King’s presentation from 3:30-4:30 pm. You must have purchased a ticket and rsvp’d to Kaitlin to enjoy reserved seating and the reception kaitlinm@sieutah.org.
